An outraged President Jonathan told the minister that he ought to have known that there would be conflict of interest in the exercise.
Why I Resigned As Minister of Power – Professor Bart Nnaji
After venting his anger at the minister, Nnaji threw in the towel by offering to step down as minister. The president, still seething, accepted it immediately. Another source pointed out that it was in the middle of the meeting with the PHCN workers and the SGF that President Goodluck Jonathan summoned him to the Villa and asked him to resign with immediate effect over his alleged conflicting interest in the privatisation process of the PHCN companies.

You have entered an incorrect email address!Barth Nnaji will begin generation and distribution of power in Aba next month. Barth Nnaji, who is also served as Chairman of the firm said, necessary arrangements have been concluded for the power company to take off. Nnaji explained that distribution of electricity from the power plant will be carried out under the name of Aba Power Limited.
He, however, maintained that generation of power will be carried out by Geometrics Company located at Osisioma in Aba. The former Minister, however, disclosed that the company would be officially commissioned in August by President Goodluck Jonathan. He disclosed that Mega Watts of electricity would be generated at the plant.
Professor Nnaji explained that the major target of the project which began inwas to make Aba become the industrial capital of Nigeria. Download Vanguard News App. Thursday 21 January. Follow vanguardngrnews.

Who is this Bart Nnaji?
Okay, thanks. From a miserly 2, Mega Watts of electricity available when he took over in Julypower supply rose steadily to 4, MW as of Tuesday evening when Nnaji resigned his post. Ogbuagu Anikwe.
Nnaji stated that not many Nigerians have had the privilege of serving the nation twice as minister and that he was grateful to have served this government in the capacity of an adviser and a ranking cabinet minister in a very challenging and complex sector. He had in served as Minister of Science and Technology. He explained that he had to voluntarily resign the office of minister to retain his integrity, which had in recent days come under scurrilous attacks by powerful interests he claimed were bent on besmirching the integrity and reputation that he had painstakingly built over the years.
In addition, I publicly declared the participation in the privatization process of a foreign company that did business with a company that I had interest in.
This fact came to my knowledge only during the course of evaluating the consortia that were bidding for PHCN successor companies. Consequently, I also voluntarily excused myself from participating in the selection process. These actions, I should think, are in line with the finest traditions of transparency and accountability in governance. The whole thing was clearly avoidable. There are many ministers far less competent than Barth and under whose watch massive fraud, corruption and more serious crimes have been committed.
Yet, they continue to sit pretty and not asked to resign. Perhaps, there is more than this ethical infraction. Fielding questions from State House correspondents, Mr Maku said rather, the resignation of the former minister would further give credibility to the process. According to Maku, though members of the National Council on Privatisation would have wished Nnaji was around to complete the process, the President Goodluck Jonathan Administration would be more consistent in the management of power.
Barth Nnaji resigned are already known to you. Let me put it clearly that Prof Nnaji resigned to give credibility to the power sector privatization process and the statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media Affairs yesterday, was very clear and explicit that the former minister of Power Prof.
Barth Nnaji resigned his position to give credibility to the process of privatization of the power sector. And less than 24 hours later, we received with gladness the dismissal of the minister. This proves that our cause is a just one and that God is on our side. Also, the leadership of the unions disclosed that they had petitioned the Presidency and the National Assembly to demand a probe of the tenure of the former Minister, against the background of allegations of corruption and personal enrichment at the expense of the sector.
Barth Nnaji, saying he compromised the Office of the Minister of Power with his personal business interests, and being oblivious and a stumbling block to industrial peace and harmony in the industry.

Okay, thanks.BN TV News. Events News. His resignation which came as a surprise to many was amidst controversies and allegations of conflict of interest in the privatization process of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
Reuben Abatithe President accepted his resignation and thanked him for his services to the nation. Following his resignation, there have been several reports in the media alleging that he was sacked and did not resign voluntarily. However, speaking to ThisDay on Tuesday night on his decision to leave the cabinet, Nnaji said he opted to resign in order to save the privatization and reform programme from those who might want to use ulterior motives to bring down the programme.
Nnaji said he had met with President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday afternoon, during which the President informed him that he was using his company as a proxy to buy shares on behalf of the president in Afam power station through the privatisation process.
On hearing this, he informed the president that rather than drag him Jonathan and the entire process through the mud, he would prefer to resign but reminded the president that he had brought it to his attention two weeks ago that a company he owned was part of a bidding consortium that had submitted bids for Enugu Distribution Company. Every freaking sector, the tiniest you can think of has a mafia. Cant believe we still have such people in 9ja. Thumbs up to Barth jare. At least if not for anything, power supply has been a bit constant for a while now.
Go succeed man!!! If the story is true, then we may be our way to civility as this is perhaps the first time a minister holding a juicy office would resign.

In office —The celebration was grand. Yet, if Nnaji had his way, he would have marked this milestone in his eminently eventful life very quietly, and would have preferred the money spent on the ceremony given to the needy. He was barely aware of the plan. His wife, Agatha, did everything in conjunction with a very small committee of relatives and friends led by Barrister Ugochukwu Agballah.
The venue could not have been more appropriate. Though Nnaji may be a global citizen in consideration of his prodigious achievements, he is, at heart, a homeboy who is probably happiest when he is in the village of his birth with his people, speaking the undiluted, rustic version of his Nkanu dialect which many young people, including those born and raised in the village, barely comprehend.
He lives almost entirely for the public. No sooner had he become a professor at less than 27 years of age in at the University of Massachusetts than he set up the Nnaji Foundation from which some persons have benefitted. Some of the beneficiaries are today distinguished lawyers and other professionals. A lover of scholarship, Nnaji has awarded overseas scholarships for postgraduate studies to brilliant students who are today executives in places like Ford Motors and the Lagos Business School, and none of them is a member of his family.
He has built houses for widows and paid the school and medical fees of numerous orphans and other indigent individuals. Just before the inception of democracy inthere was a major crisis between his Umuode people and their neighbouring Oruku community which resulted in deaths and arson on a prodigious scale. The entire Umuode community went into exile, with a large number of people relocating to his expansive residence in GRA, Enugu city.
His residence looked like a scene from Biafra. Nnaji fed and provided for the large number of people for years until peace was restored in their ancestral home. When the residence of the parish priest of the Umuode Catholic Church was burnt, Nnaji wasted no time moving the priest to his own residence where he still lives. In Nnaji one sees a human manifestation of the scriptural saying that there is no love greater than the fact that a man should lay down his life for the benefit of his people John By writing this tribute in the media, I know I must be embarrassing Nnaji.
He is genuinely humble and does not want the public to know of his philanthropy. He takes seriously the words of the scripture that the left hand should not know what the right hand is doing when you give to the needy Matthew I know of his philanthropy because of our special relationship.
Philanthropy is not just a personal virtue. It is even a good business strategy, part of what is now called corporate social responsibility CSR. It is a civic responsibility and vital for eternal life. To a lot of people in Nkanuland and elsewhere, Nnaji is the Mother Teresa they know, feel and touch.
Truly, his has been a life of sacrificial love.Power Reform in Nigeria with Minister Nnaji

In this article: Bart Nnaji.Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji was, yesterday, relieved of his job following the acceptance of his resignation, with immediate effect, by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
In a two-paragraph statement from Presidential media aide, Dr. Reuben Abati, the president thanked? Nnaji for his services to the nation under the present administration and wishes him well in his future endeavours.?
Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji. This is the first time a minister would be resigning under controversial circumstances since the inception of President Jonathan? But the Minister did not pick calls to his line or respond to a text message sent to him to clarify some of the issues leading to his exit.
Although no reason was given for Nnaji? This might not be unconnected with moves, not only to save his job, but also to clear some of the controversies surrounding the bids, in which he was linked to the consortia that submitted bids for Afam and Enugu DISCO. Nnaji was said to have admitted that some members of the bidding consortia had links to a company he owns Aba-based, Geometric Poweradding that the NCP?
He described recent accusations that he indirectly sought to acquire the PHCN successor companies through firms that have links to him as part of a grand design to dent the credibility of the privatisation process. He maintained that the development was a ploy by different interest groups in the sector to destabilise the ongoing power sector reform and privatisation process.
In a statement from his media aide, Mr. Don Adinuba, the minister said that a media report on Monday, alleging his participation in the privatisation process, was part of a strategy of such interest groups, adding that he was never asked by Vice President Namadi Sambo to walk out of the NCP meeting last Friday. Rather, he maintained that he had opted to excuse himself from the meeting on the basis of his discovery that the firm in which he had placed his shares in a blind trust was part of the consortium bidding for Afam Power Station, in Rivers State.
According to him:? The Federal Ministry of Power has always known that the beneficiaries of the old and decadent order in the electric power sector would not accept the new, far-reaching changes in the power sector without a fight. With power supply at an all-time high across the nation in the last few weeks and with the privatisation of PHCN assets at an advanced stage to the delight of the Nigerian people, those who have been feeding fat on the misery of our citizens have been fighting back with unimaginable ferocity.?
The minister further accused some sections of the media of colluding with his detractors, saying,? He also informed the NCP that Geometric Power has a minority stake in Eastern Electric Nigeria Limited, which had submitted technical and financial bids for Enugu Disco on July 31, and excused himself from the consideration of the report of the technical bids.
His impressive performance as a presidential aide led to his appointment as the Minister of Power. Although right from his time of appointment, he has had a running battle with the electricity workers unions, notably, the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, who constantly accused him of not honouring agreements reached with workers on the power reforms.
In spite of the numerous criticisms against him, power generation had increased tremendously under his watch, reaching an all time high of 4, The unprecedented domestic and international investor confidence in the Nigerian power sector is directly traceable to the personal and professional integrity of the process drivers like Professor Nnaji. His style of administration was said to have led to the high interest by foreign investors in Nigeria? He said:?
God has eventually answered our prayers and made the government to listen to us. It is obvious that the government has noted his several misdeeds.
Why Barth Nnaji Resigned…
We are all very happy. In fact, we thank God for answering our prayers. We hope the government will appoint a right person that will carry all stakeholders along, especially the union to give Nigeria a stable power supply?. In his own reaction, General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Comrade Joe Ajaero said, though the reason adduced for his resignation, was unclear, the union had, for some time now, been calling for his resignation based on strong allegation of corruption.
The reason for his resignation was very unclear. We would have been happier if the reasons were made known. However, we have been calling on him to resign. We still stand on the demand because of the strong evidence we have. You are aware that in recent time, the issue of his conflict of interest has been in the front burner.
